You can easily stage your product photos against a beautiful backdrop, or simply use them as wall art. This DIY project allows you to create something colorful with a simple process.

What is a watercolor background?

A watercolor background is a painting created on a large sheet pf paper or canvas that can be propped behind something you’re going to photograph. These paintings could be abstract designs, objects, faux textures, or splatter paintings like I show in the video tutorial below. There are many ways to approach backdrops and it’s all about picking the one for you! Your output will be different from everyone else’s depending on your style and creative expression. Just dive in and get lost in the process; you’re bound to create something fun!

How DIY Watercolor Backgrounds Are Created

Backgrounds require a steady hand and multiple strokes to cover the entire paper. You can achieve this with a wet in wet or wet on dry technique. If you’re new to watercolor painting you can study those techniques here. Just follow the steps outlined and you’ll be able to replicate the tutorials below. Wet in wet technique allows you to create a smooth background with colors that blend.

The watercolor backgrounds can be used for any product backdrop or watercolor background for a design project.

The splatter watercolor technique in this step by step video achieves a beautiful backdrop for a night sky, starry night, or even aurora borealis type of painting. The more you practice this technique, the easier backdrops will be for other projects. You’ll learn how the colors interact as you mix different ones. This technique also uses one of the fundamental watercolor styles. Splattering your painting with white paint allows for unpredictable marks making it more appealing to the eye. When paintings remain too symmetrical or designed, they lose a sense of realism.

This DIY project shows you how to create a product backdrop with water and one color. This simple backdrop provides a creative pop and flare for your products. You could paint a complimentary color on a large sheet of paper and use it as stylized backdrop for the product.

I have seen many other ideas for creating watercolor backdrops. You could create beautiful backdrops and list as wall art for sale on various websites, or have them printed as posters. If you have an audience for your work, you can sell prints or posters to your fans. Below are a few examples of what you could create with a little bit of creativity and practice.
